The headline of your online article, advertisement or blog post plays an important role in attracting the right type of prospect -- the type of customer who needs and will likely want your product offering, also known as your target audience.
Advertising guru David Ogilvy called the headline as the "ticket on the meat." Its main purpose is to flag down readers who are interested in the product you sell.
And just how important is the headline? Again, from David Ogilvy: "On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar."
In other words, precious little is more important in your advertisement or article than your headline.
The following are 11 tried and tested templates that work well in headlines:
1. The Secret of (_________)
By definition, a secret takes on an aura of importance because it is shared only by a few individuals. That's one reason why this type of headline is quite common.
* The Secret of Successful Blogging
* The Secret of Making Millions on the Stock Market
* The Secret to a Long and Stress-Free Life
2. (Type of action) like (well-known example)
This is an aspirational type of headline that tells people that they can achieve what they want. Perhaps the best known example of this headline is Gatorade's "Be Like Mike" campaign revolving around NBA superstar Michael Jordan about a decade ago.
* Dance like Fred Astaire
* Golf like Tiger Woods
* Look like a Super Model
3. (Have or Build) a (goal) You Can Be Proud Of
Another type of aspirational headline that promises the reader that he can achieve or attain something that he wants.
* Build a Web Site You Can Be Proud Of
* Have a House You Can Be Proud Of
* Build a Set of Washboard Abs You Can Be Proud of
4. Give Me (time element) and I'll Give You (goal)
This type of headline revolves around a much-desired consumer benefit, as do most of the headlines here. The difference is that it gives a specific time element when this benefit can be achieved.
* Give Me One Hour a Day and I'll Give You the Voice of a Opera Singer
* Give Me Three Months and I'll Give You the Stamina of a Marathoner
* Give Me Two Weeks and I'll Teach You How to Speak Perfect Spanish
5. Little Known Ways to (goal)
Here's a variation of the "secret" type headline, as in number one above. It's less commonly used than our first example.

6. Who Else Wants (goal)
This headline implies that the goal is already widely-desired by a number of people.

7. Get Rid of (problem) Once and For All
This type of problem-solving headline is a classic. It tells readers how they can get rid of a nagging problem or achieve an unfulfilled goal.

* Get Rid of On-the-Job Distractions Once and For All
8. Do You Make These Mistakes?
Here's a variation of the previous problem-solving headline. Here, the problems are identified as mistakes and the copy includes suggestions on how they can be avoided.

9. Here’s a Quick Way to (solving a problem)
This headline hints at an easy solution to solving a problem or an easy way to achieve a goal.
